The Desmond School of Beauty Culture
Gottingen Street, Halifax, NS, Canada

Viola Desmond, who was named a National Historic Person in 2018, was born and raised in Halifax. Growing up, Demond noticed the absence of professional hair and skin care products for Black women. Because of her African descent, she was not allowed to train to become a beautician in Halifax. After completing her training in Montreal and New York, she returned to Halifax and opened a hair salon and The Desmond School of Beauty Culture. She is also known for the human rights and resistance story currently featured in Roseland Theatre in New Glasgow. On July 7, 2016, Halifax named the harbour ferry after her.
